Volzhsky trip May 2000 - Greg
Nastya was a wonderful hostess! Before my trip, she answered all of my
questions and made me secure that every detail of my visit would be taken
care of. Even my laundry! She arranged to meet me at the airport with the
woman I was most fond of from my letters. She sent me any papers I would
need for my visa. (I had them done through my travel agent, so it turned
out they were redundant, but I did not know that.) She told me that I
would be staying in a very nice apartment, and need not worry about hotels.
I had Aeroflot through Moscow. I needed to stay overnight near the
airport to catch the flight to Volgograd the next afternoon. The Hotel
Sheremetyevo-2, across the street from the Terminal 2 was a more than
decent place to stay for the overnight. It was inexpensive, but did not
register my visa as it was a Sunday. This turned out to give me big
troubles later on my trip. I would urge that everyone have their visa
registered. Not every policeman, hotel clerk, or airport official knows
the nuances of the "visas need to be registered only if staying in Moscow
more than three days and holidays and weekends do not count" rule. I had
troubles re-entering after my foray to Minsk, when registering at my hotel
in St. Petersburg (the Oktyabrskaya, a good, inexpensive hotel nicely
located), and when trying to fly back to the US. I have told my travel
agent, the San Francisco travel agency of Aeroflot. They are very
surprised I had any troubles. Also, please tell your clients to pay close
attention to the terminals (1 and 2) of Sheremetyevo. And, that there are
only two ways to go between them. Option 1 is if you are lucky, and find
the Aeroflot Transit office (hidden in the Arrivals area inside the
luggage claim area).
The lady will take you to a bus to go to the other terminal. The
alternative is to take a taxi, who will show you his pre-printed card
proving he is not ripping you off for the $55 drive to the other terminal.
Which is a 6km, 8-minute drive. I talked the driver down to 100 roubles,
because I told him these statistics, and you know how Russians love
engineering statistics.
Upon reaching Volgograd, Nastya met me at the airport. The chaotic
weather played tricks with us. Nastya worked very hard to "break the ice"
between me and Valya, the woman I wrote most often in Volzhsky. At
dinner, she translated menus, made suggestions, and presented me with a
kind gift. Her fluency with English, and her warm personality made me
feel like I was secure, and would enjoy my visit. She showed me my
apartment, and how and where everything was. She always told me what the
next day's agenda would be, or if there wasn't one, asked if I had any
desires. She always obliged. She brought me to a dacha cookout, and to the
market place (David's suggestion? Yes, the meat place was ghoulish the
first time through!). We went to a dance place in the evening. But all
this was more than pure entertainment. I felt I was making
close friendships with her, feeling included by the people she and Valya
know, and getting to interact with the Russian people. We visited
museums, walked the town streets, or had lengthy lunches where I asked
hundreds of questions about the people, culture, and the realities of
Russian-American marriages and agencies. We discussed what I was looking
for in a woman, and whether I was finding it with her clients. I found
all I wanted in Valya, the first woman I met. But Nastya thought it would
be good if I met another woman, if anything but to give me more exposure
to Russian women. I met Marina, and my appreciation for Valya increased a
hundred times. Not that Marina was a bad person, but that I realized more
about what was so good about Valya for me. I met many women in my onwards
travel in Minsk. And although some could be very good candidates for a
relationship, with each lady I realized more and more that my heart
belongs for Valya.
Nastya's care for me was complete. If she was unable to accompany me, she
told me well in advance, and ensured that someone-- Uliana-- would be with
me. Uliana was also very kind, and very good as a translator. We enjoyed
our excursion to the bank.
Nastya taught me much about Russian people, the history, and culture. She
also "prepared" me for events like meeting Valya's parents. By that time,
I had trusted Nastya as a good friend, and followed her guidance to the
letter. And all was still very enjoyable.
And while we (Nastya, Valya, and myself) were having a good time, where
Valya and I learned more and more about each other, Nastya always kept "on
the job." Even when I had some unexpected problems getting onto my plane
when leaving Volgograd. Good thing she stayed in the airport until I left!
Vasili, our driver, was excellent. He was always there for us. He would
take us to places, pick the best cuts of meat, or keep guard over us in a
night club that might be attended by a tough crowd. He would even run
into a shop to ask for a receipt for me if it would be useful for when I
pass through Customs! He was untiring, even if we were out late, or up
early. And always safe, which is an accomplishment on some of those
roads! I had a good feeling when he was nearby. I hope he gets regular
employment from Nastya's agency.
It was very kind of her to allow me to use the office for any
correspondence I wanted to send by email to home. Knowing that internet
time is expensive, and the computer is a rare resource for her company, I
did not take up on her offers as much as I could have. But it was nice to
feel that any of my needs would be met quickly and with a smile. Nastya made me
feel like friend & family. When I returned from Minsk, to go up to St.
Petersburg for a few days, I was happy to be back in Russia, where I
"understood" things, thanks to Nastya and Valya.
I hope she expands her business into Volgograd. I have some friends who
are thinking of applying to her services! I cannot think of anything I
would have liked to be done differently on my visit to Volzhsky, except to
have stayed longer. Valya is every dream I have. And Nastya is a friend.
Nastya asked me to write a "personal story" of my experience for her
website. I would like to do this for her, and add pictures. And, if
people ask for a "customer reference", I would certainly put out the good
word for her. My visit with Valya may have succeeded without the careful
guidance of Nastya. But her guidance helped to make for the best chance
of success with Valya, and for that I am grateful. I wish now to bring
Valya to the US and marry her.
