I graduated university in 1994 with an honours degree in Software Engineering. At that time, I was a student, and there were hundred suitable educated women who you could date. I was interested in a career and had no intention of getting into a serious relationship. I moved away and worked for a number of multinational companies, working mainly in the IT field.
When I was 25 I decided that I had enough for short term relationships and wanted something more stable and lasting in my life. I was aware how the women in my life had never really meet my expectations and how self interest seemed to be at the prime in their mind. I, probably like many men of my time, didn't like the idea of a "modern husband" and longed to meet the girl that just wanted a "traditional husband".
At the time I decided I wanted to settle down, I wasn't really in the right place to meet the women that I wanted to marry. Most of the women I met, although attractive, lacked any decent education and sometime even a modest amount of intelligence. The only lady who came half close was a girl I dated for a while from Belgium. Working in an environment didn't help the situation, as there are very few women who work in IT.
About a month or so later, I happened to hear a radio program about the internet. They had a section on "internet brides", dealing with a site called Foreign Affair. This site allowed western men to see photos of women who wanted to meet western men with the intention of marriage. Being a curious soul, I decided to have a look, and ended up joining as a member of their site. The main thing that struck me was the women were so beautiful, were educated to a very high standard, and wanted a traditional family marriage. I had found what I was searching for, but in a country which up until ten years ago we could have consider our enemy.
I became very interested in everything Russian and started to learn as much as I could. I enrolled in Russian classes, got whatever papers I could find, and started to learn a lot more about the whole subject. I started writing letters to ladies, from all over and placed adverts in local papers and magazines. After a few months, it became obvious to me that the postal system was really quite awful. I would send a letter and it could take a week to arrive. The lady would then have to translate it and write a reply in English, which might take another week. Then her return reply would take a week to arrive. You were lucky to send and receive a letter in the same month, which made getting to know someone so very difficult. I later found out that a considerable portion of foreign mail never gets delivered and is either stolen in the postal service, or taken by other people from the ladies mail box.
I quite rapidly became disillusioned by the whole process and especially with foreign affair. It seemed they had so many male clients that there was such competition it was simply not worth writing to any lady. By the time you got to know her, she had already got married and gone off with another bloke. I often wondered about the addresses I was receiving and if they ladies ever received my letters.
I then came across the service, which was later to become the starting point of the network of agencies we now have. This service was based in the former USSR, rather than being US based. It had an office on the ground, in the city from which the ladies came. Most importantly, however, it provided the ability to send letters by email and I could pay using a credit card. No longer must I wait for weeks for a reply. The agency translated letters and knew the ladies, so there was some guarantee that the lady was actively looking and hadn't found her partner months ago. The fact I could pay by credit card made it so much easier. There were a number of former USSR agencies, all over the various towns, generally with as little as 20-30 ladies, so you spent forever searching to find them. This agency had around 500 ladies to chose from and a decent search engine to boot.
After two visits to Belarus, Oksana came to the UK on a tourist visa for a month in October 1999. I proposed soon after and she then had to return to Belarus and come back on a fiancée visa. We were married 11th March 2000, one day in my life I will never forget. She is the most wonderful, caring a lovely person I know. I was not happy to just leave finding my wife to chance, and had gone out and found the lady I knew was right for me. She hardly spoke a word of English when we first me in May 1999, although, 18 months on, she now speaks the language perfectly. It was not an easy path to follow, but to have a loving, caring and faithful wife is worth more to me anything in this world.
Blue Sapphires is run by myself, Shane Cook, with the help of many people from all over the former USSR, and that of my wife, Oksana. Several people have asked me about our story, so I've put together this page.
I remember buying a compilation album by Elton John, his greatest hits. On there was a song, Nikita, I still love to this day. It's about a lady in the former East Germany who falls in love with a western guy, but is never allowed to cross the border and spend the time with the guy she loves. The one thing that struck me was how beautiful Nikita was.
I met my lovely wife, Oksana, through our Gomel based agency, first in Minsk and then in her home town of Gomel. I wanted to spend some time living in Belarus, because the immigration regulations in the UK made if difficult to get to know someone well enough to marry them over here. Our Gomel agency was, at that time, run by my now partner David Stickney. He was a US ex-pat who had been living over there for the past four years (now six). He wanted to expand the agency base, and helped me setup Blue Sapphires in the UK. From that point onwards, we moved rapidly to setup offices in Minsk, the capital of Belarus. After a short while, we opened offices in cities in the Ukraine and Russia and more recently Bulgaria and now the Baltic states.
With the Blue Sapphires site, we have put many couples together. The ladies of the former USSR have such a bad choice of men, and western men not such a great choice in women, that for those people with a little bit of vision, there can be great happiness. I love it when we get a message "Olga and I are getting engaged", "I proposed to Svetlana in Red Square" or "We want to apply for a fiancee visa for Tanya" etc. It means we've succeeded and brought love into someone else's life.
If you've found love through our site and would like to write a page for us, let us know and tell the world how wonderful is is. Email me at office@bluesapphires.net
